Course Objectives

This course develops the knowledge and professional skills required for effective Mathematics teaching. Student teachers will learn to:

  • Understand the aims, objectives, significance, and values of teaching Mathematics.

  • Develop essential micro-teaching skills for Mathematics classrooms.

  • Prepare effective and structured Mathematics lesson plans.

  • Understand and apply different methods of teaching Mathematics.

  • Develop ICT knowledge and skills for technology-supported Mathematics teaching.

Unit I: Aims and Objectives of Teaching Mathematics

This unit covers the meaning, nature, scope, need, significance, values, aims, and objectives of Mathematics teaching. It introduces instructional and behavioural objectives and their importance in classroom teaching. Student teachers explore Bloom’s Taxonomy, including the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains, along with the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy (2001) by Anderson and Krathwohl. The unit also focuses on the interrelationship among learning domains and correlation between subjects.

Unit II: Teaching Skills

This unit introduces micro-teaching, including its concept, definition, steps, cycle, and distinction from macro-teaching. Student teachers develop key teaching skills such as set induction, explaining, blackboard usage, questioning, probing, stimulus variation, reinforcement, use of non-verbal clues, and closure. Link lessons and model teaching episodes are also included.

Unit III: Approaches to Teaching

This unit focuses on lesson planning approaches, their stages, and the organisation of teaching. Student teachers explore the Memory Level through the Herbartian Model, Understanding Level through the Morrison Teaching Model, and Reflective Level through the Bigge and Hunt Teaching Model. The unit also covers unit planning and Mathematics lesson plan writing.

Unit IV: Methods of Teaching Mathematics

The unit introduces teacher-centred and learner-centred approaches to Mathematics teaching. Topics include lecture, demonstration, team teaching, self-learning, programmed instruction, computer-assisted instruction, Keller Plan, project method, Activity Based Learning (ABL), Active Learning Method (ALM), mind mapping, and Advanced Active Learning Method (AALM).

Unit V: Instructional Media

This unit explores the classification and classroom use of instructional media in Mathematics education. It introduces emerging educational technologies such as tele-conferencing, communication satellites, computer networking, word processors, blended learning, flipped classrooms, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality.

Suggested Learning Activities
