B.Ed Computer Science

Computer Science Education – Course Content
Course Objectives
This course develops the knowledge, teaching skills, and professional competence required for effective Computer Science teaching. Student teachers will learn to:
Understand the aims, objectives, nature, scope, significance, and values of teaching Computer Science.
Understand the principles and steps involved in effective lesson planning.
Develop essential teaching and micro-teaching skills for Computer Science classrooms.
Understand different models and levels of teaching Computer Science.
Explore and apply various methods and approaches of teaching Computer Science.
Gain knowledge of instructional media and emerging educational technologies used in Computer Science teaching.
Unit I: Aims and Objectives of Teaching Computer Science
This unit introduces the meaning, nature, scope, need, and significance of Computer Science education. It examines the values, aims, and objectives of teaching Computer Science and focuses on the formulation of instructional and behavioural objectives.
Student teachers will understand the need and importance of instructional objectives and study Bloom’s Taxonomy of Instructional Objectives, including the Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor Domains. The unit also covers the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy (2001) developed by Anderson and Krathwohl, the interrelationship among the learning domains, and correlation between subjects.
Unit II: Teaching Skills
This unit focuses on micro-teaching as a systematic approach to developing effective teaching skills. Student teachers will learn the concept, definition, steps, and cycle of micro-teaching, along with the differences between Micro-Teaching and Macro-Teaching.
The unit develops key teaching skills such as set induction, explaining, questioning, probing, stimulus variation, reinforcement, use of non-verbal clues, and closure. Link lessons and model teaching episodes are also included to provide practical experience in classroom teaching.
Unit III: Approaches of Teaching
This unit introduces different approaches to lesson planning and the steps involved in organising effective teaching. Student teachers will explore different levels of teaching through established teaching models.
The Memory Level is studied through the Herbartian Model, the Understanding Level through the Morrison Teaching Model, and the Reflective Level through the Bigge and Hunt Teaching Model. The unit also focuses on unit planning and Computer Science lesson plan writing.
Unit IV: Methods of Teaching Computer Science
This unit explores different teacher-centred and learner-centred methods of teaching Computer Science.
Teacher-centred instruction includes the Lecture Method, Demonstration Method, and Team Teaching. Learner-centred instruction includes Self-Learning and its various forms, such as Programmed Instruction, Computer-Assisted Instruction, Keller Plan, Project Method, Activity Based Learning (ABL), Active Learning Method (ALM), Mind Mapping, and Advanced Active Learning Method (AALM).
These approaches provide student teachers with a range of strategies for planning and delivering engaging Computer Science learning experiences.
Unit V: Instructional Media
This unit focuses on the classification and effective use of instructional media in Computer Science education. It also examines the use of mass media in classroom instruction and introduces emerging technologies that support modern teaching and learning.
Student teachers will explore Tele-Conferencing, Communication Satellites, Computer Networking, Word Processors, Blended Learning, Flipped Classroom, Artificial Intelligence, and Augmented Reality as emerging instructional media and technology-supported approaches.
Suggested Learning Activities
The course provides practical opportunities for student teachers to apply their knowledge through:
Writing general and specific instructional objectives for selected Computer Science lessons.
Preparing a model teaching episode and link lesson using selected micro-teaching skills.
Developing a Computer Science lesson plan for a selected topic.
Preparing programmed learning instructional material for a selected Computer Science topic.
Writing an essay on the classification of instructional media and their role in classroom instruction.
